Nabaneeta Debsen
As an invited guest of Bangla Sahitya Sansad, Nabaneeta Dev Sen presented a workshop on Saturday 6 November 2004 at Oakleigh Mechanic Hall, Oakleigh.
The workshop was immenseley enjoyed by a large number of audience who participated in a lively literary discussion with the author at the conclusion of the program.
Kolkata and Dhaka
An interesting workshop was held at Ashburton Library on Saturday 18 September 2004 which explored the history, culture, literature and the people of Kolkata and the mega city Dhaka.
The unique theme of babu culture in the 18th and 19th century Kolkata was depicted in the form of a short play.
A literary function on Bengali Children’s Literature was organised on Saturday 26 June 2004 at Ashburton Library. Members of Bangla Sahitya Sansad presented Sukumar Roy’s famous comedy Abak Jalpan and Kheerer Putul (theMilk Cake Doll) a famous fairy tale written by Abanindra Nath Tagore was narrated to the audience. There were also presentations on Children’s Literature from Bangladesh, Plays of Sukumar Roy, Poetry of Sukumar Roy and Rhymes of East and West : A Comparison.
Bangla Sahitya Sansad hosted a literary symposium on Sunday 21 March 2004 at Ashburton Library. The theme of the evening was Women in South Asian Literature. Various BSS members talked about the following famale writers:
– Shaidullah Kaiser and Abu Ishak
– Ashapurna Devi
– Suchitra Bhattacharya
– Jhumpa Lahiri
On Saturday 7 February 2004, Sandipan Samajpati, a young musician from Bengal, presented a classical vocal recital at Ashburton Library. He was accompanied by Hiranmay Mitra on tabla.
